Cavendish sprints to California stage win

Mark Cavendish claimed victory in Stage 4 of the Tour of California

Britain's Mark Cavendish helped to cement his reputation as arguably the world's fastest cyclist by sprinting to victory in Stage 4 of the 2009 Tour of California yesterday. The Isle of Man-born rider took the win after completing a gruelling 115.3-mile course, which included five King of the Mountain and two sprint competitions set against a backdrop of the Sierra Mountains. "This win was massive for me and for the team," said Cavendish. "I was really driven and I wanted this win bad."The win leaves Cavendish in 80th place overall. Former two-time Tour of California champion Levi Leipheimer of the USA remains overall leader. Meanwhile, seven-times Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong is in fourth place after finishing Stage 4 with the pack. The Australian remains 30 seconds behind Leipheimer but in some good news, Armstrong's specially-designed bike, which was stolen earlier in the week, has been handed in to police. Both Armstrong and Leipheimer are among the favourites in the betting to win the Tour of California, along with David Zabriskie, Tyler Hamilton and overall favourite Michael Rogers.
