Formula One shelves new scoring plan

Ecclestone says the changes will come in next year

Changes to the way the Formula One drivers' championship is awarded have been shelved until next season, the sport's governing body has announced.Last week the FIA revealed that the driver who accumulates the most wins would be handed the title, with the traditional points system being used to determine the other places. But after the system was rejected by teams and drivers, the plans have been deferred until 2010.Lewis Hamilton had been tipped to retain his title before the change was announced, with Kimi Raikkonen then being installed as favourite. However, the reversal has not meant the Briton is the top choice again, with his car's poor performance in testing making him fourth favourite - Sportingbet offering the best odds of 11/2.Meanwhile, Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone, speaking ahead of the first Grand Prix of the season in Melbourne this Sunday, assured BBC Radio 5 Live that the rule change would come in next year."It will be in the regulations, so when the people enter the championship, that's what the regulation will be," he said.
