Lola to join Formula One?

The sport is locked in a budget cap dispute

Formula One could be set to welcome at least one new team next season, as UK car company Lola has revealed it will be applying for a place on the grid. The organisation indicated that it was prompted to make the move by news that a budget cap is to be introduced for the 2010 championship. In a statement, it explained that limiting costs is crucial in order to allow new teams to join the sport."This is not only prudent considering the backdrop of global economics, but also taking into account the need for new teams to be able to compete credibly against long-established entrants," said Lola. However, the plan to implement a £40 million optional restriction has created controversy this week.Formula One bosses intend to give greater technical freedom to those teams to adhere to it, but fears that a two-tier system will be created have prompted Ferrari, Renault, Red Bull and Toyota to all issue threats to quit the sport.Brawn GP are currently 9/10 favourites with WBX to win the 2009 constructors' championship, with reigning champions Ferrari priced 16/1 by Betfred after struggling in the early part of the season.
