Schumacher pulls out of F1 return

Schumacher injury is too severe

Michael Schumacher has pulled out of a Formula One comeback because of a neck injury.

The 40-year-old told his official website that despite medical and therapeutic remedies, the damage - which was sustained in a bike accident earlier this year - was too severe to allow him to participate.

He stated: "Unfortunately we did not manage to get a grip on the pain in the neck which occurred after the private F1-day in Mugello," adding, that he would be unable to "stand the extreme stresses caused by Formula One"

Commenting that he had informed Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo last night (August 10th), the German expressed his disappointment at being unable to take part and apologised to his team and the fans.

The news could affect odds, with Coral (Go to Coral ») currently offering 4/6 that Ferrari will not win a race for the remainder of 2009.

Jenson Button remains the favourite at a number of bookies and the Brawn driver is 46-49 with Sporting Index (Go to Sporting Index »).
